After a break over the summer months, the members of the Lakes Entrance Garden Club are looking forward to another successful and enjoyable year.
Meetings of the Lakes Entrance Garden Club are held once a month on the third Monday from 1.30pm at the Lakes Entrance Mechanics Hall.
The showbench of flowers is judged prior to a short meeting. A guest speaker follows then a lovely afternoon tea when members can socialise and look over the trading table which is full of plants and books and other goods for sale or swap.
Guest speakers in 2024 covered very varied and interesting topics. Graeme Hunt showed members amazing photos from his world travels; Craig Castree demonstrated how to feed the soil, not the plants; Mike Hinchey on his time stationed in Antarctica in the 1970’s; Glenda McKay who operated a rose nursery in South Africa; Tanja Hennekam talked about getting involved with the Bairnsdale Show; Judy Clarke from East Gippsland Verge Garden group; Glen Hodges, partner in Hibbert and Hodges Lawyers; Glenda MacKay demonstrating basket weaving/coiling; Don and Kay Moore with their own style of music; and Irene Skilton from the Royal Flying Doctor Service – Community Transport division.
A monthly social outing is organised for the fourth week of each month. Local gardens or other interesting places are visited and the lunch venue is a hotel or café.
Trips with several nights away are planned for the calendar. Last year the spring trip was to the Upper Yarra Valley and Warburton and the Alpine Retreat Hotel was the perfect base.
Visiting local gardens and several plant nurseries made for a lovely time.
So if you are looking for a new club to join in 2025, head along to the first Lakes Entrance Garden Club meeting for the year on Monday, February 17, from 1.30pm at the Mechanics Hall.
Visitors and new members are always welcome.
